Prof Marais is Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry and Air Quality at University College London. She leads a major research group (maraisresearchgroup.co.uk) focused on addressing air quality knowledge gaps using satellite observations and models. The group is sustained with grant funding from the European Research Council, UK Research Councils, the UK Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the European Space Agency, and the Stockholm Environment Institute.

Prof Marais obtained a PhD from Harvard University on a Fulbright Scholarship investigating air quality in Africa using satellite observations. She has since acquired over a decade of experience applying satellite observations to investigate air quality in undersampled regions of the world, and to quantify emissions of air pollutant precursors from under-regulated sources such as agriculture. Prof Marais is frequently invited by leading news agencies (e.g., BBC, Bloomberg, New York Times, The Guardian, Time Magazine, Reuters) to discuss her research and provide air quality expertise.

Prof Marais has provided satellite observations of air quality expertise as member of the US Health Effects Institute Global Health Oversight Committee in 2020-2023 and the UK Air Quality Experts Group in 2022-2024. She is co-lead of the International GEOS-Chem Model, a chemical transport model used by the more than 100 institutions worldwide. Most recently and due to her contribution framing a new research discipline focused on investigating the atmospheric impact of spacecraft launches and re-entries, Prof Marais participated in a UNEP-UNOOSA workshop to establish the state of knowledge and guide regulation.
